Brazil Sounds: Pagode - The Renewed samba

The Pagode came with new instruments like banjo and tan-tan, a new language that reflected what is known in Portuguese as “malandragem”, a language full of slang.

The most popular artists were Zeca Pagodinho , Almir Guineto, Grupo Fundo de Quintal, Jorge Aragão, and Jovelina Pérola Negra. To know them, see the following sample videos:

Currently, the Pagode has two styles. The first one, known as Pagode de Raiz (pagode of root) is related to the Partido-Alto , which preserves the sounds of past generations. The second one, and highly popular, is called “pagode romântico” (romantic pagode). See more videos of artists from both styles:
